We have listed "Frequently Asked Questions" for the MOLDINO carbide thread cutting cutter series.

Applicable products: ET-PN, EDT-TH, EDT-PT-ATH, EDT-NPT-ATH

1. Thread size

Q-1) Can it process thread sizes other than the nominal diameters recommended in Catalogue?
A-1) There are also sizes that can be processed. If the pitch is the same, fine threads can also be processed. For example, the ET-1.0-12-PN for processing metric coarse threads M6 can process fine threads M8 x 1 of the same pitch.
Please also see Q-2 and A-2.

Q-2) Are there any threads with nominal diameters that cannot be machined, even if the pitch is the same?
A-2) It is possible to machine female threads larger than the nominal diameter recommended in Catalogue. Care must be taken with the pilot hole diameter. However, it cannot be used for threads smaller than the recommended nominal diameter, as machining will change the three-dimensional thread shape.

Q-3) Which tolerance class (grade) represents the thread precision of the tool?
A-3) It is equivalent to 5H for metric coarse threads and 6H for metric fine threads (both are old JIS Class 2).

2. Types of machined threads

Q-4) Can male threads be machined?
A-4) This product is for female thread processing. We do not recommend processing male threads.

Q-5) Can left-handed threads be machined?
A-5) Yes, it can be done. Right-handed threads are helically machined clockwise, and left-handed threads are helically machined counterclockwise. You can create an NC program for left-handed threads using our "Carbide Thread Cutting Cutter NC Program Creation Software."

Q-6) Can it machine the same size of screw hole for a helical insert?
A-6) Yes, it can be processed.

Q-7) Can it machine parallel pipe threads?
A-7) We do not have standard stock items for processing parallel pipe threads. Taper pipe threads (PT, NPT) are standard stock items. We have some experience in manufacturing parallel pipe threads of the G standard. (As of March 2025)

Q-8) Can the Epoch D Thread Mill EDT-TH be used for machining with pilot holes?
A-8) If there is a pilot hole, we recommend using the Epoch Thread Mill ET-PN, but the Epoch D Thread Mill EDT-TH can also be used.

3.NC Program

Q-9) Can I use the NC program created with the "Carbide Thread Cutting Cutter NC Program Creation Software" posted on the MOLDINO URL as is?
A-9) The NC programs in the above "NC program creation software" are for reference only. The control is compatible with FANUC. To use it, you will need to modify the machine code, coordinate system, and each work purpose. Please check the NC program you use yourself.

Q-10) How do I use tool diameter compensation?
A-10) "Tool diameter compensation" is used to adjust the diameter accuracy of the screw. When creating an NC program based on the tool center using FANUC's tool diameter compensation (G41, G42), input the tool radius value into compensation value D and perform machining. If the thread passage gauge does not pass, reduce the tool diameter compensation value to enlarge the screw diameter.
Precautions for use: Regarding tool diameter compensation (see page 19)

4. During cutting

Q-11) It broke relatively quickly. What was the problem?
A-11) First, check how and in what direction the coolant is being applied. The most common problem is that the coolant does not reach the tool properly, causing chips to clog. Adjust the coolant so that it is applied to the inside of the screw hole.
Precautions for use: Regarding coolant (see page 19)

Q-12) The machining dimension at the back of the screw hole seems to be negative, so the thread gauge cannot pass through. Is there any solution?
A-12) This may be due to the tool bending too much towards the back of the screw. In this case, remachining with zero cut will result in a high-precision finish.

Q-13) Can you cut Work material are not listed in the standard Cutting conditions Catalogue?
A-13) There are also examples of machining aluminum alloys, super heat-resistant alloys, titanium alloys, etc. Please give it a try. This tool is compatible with a wider range of Work material than tapping.
You can also find examples of machining of Work material with a proven track record here.
